ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Police continue searching for a suspect who stole a woman’s car with a baby inside Tuesday night.
The female victim was at a gas station near Bircher Boulevard and Shreve Avenue; she left the car running with her daughter in a child’s seat and went inside the store. According to the victim, that's when a suspect sprinted up and jumped in the victim's vehicle and drove off with the one-year-old baby still in the car.
A witness called police before officers spotted the car and chased the suspect. He wrecked closed to the intersection of Richard Place and Korte Avenue.
The suspect then fled on foot. Police searched the area with the assistance of a helicopter and search dogs. The suspect is still at large.
The child was still inside the car after the collision. Emergency crews determined the baby was OK.
While the investigation is ongoing, officers say they see a rise in car thefts closer to the holidays. They argue criminals will steal a car, hoping Christmas presents are inside.
Nearly 300 car thefts or carjackings happened around St. Louis in November and another 297 happened in October.
