Vaughn: SEC getting stronger by the day

ST. LOUIS (Missouri Football App) -- By any measure the Southeastern Conference was already the best conference in college football. They currently have six of the top ten teams in the BCS rankings.

Alabama will play Notre Dame for the national title next month, and if the Crimson Tide win that game the SEC will have its seventh consecutive national championship team.  Recent coaching hires suggest the SEC is about to get even deeper and better.

Arkansas has hired Bret Bielema away from Wisconsin, where he led the Badgers to three consecutive Big Ten titles.

Auburn has hired Gus Malzahn, who was their offensive coordinator when they won the national title. Malzahn spent just one year as head coach at Arkansas State and led that team to the Sun Belt conference championship.

Kentucky hired Mark Stoops, who had been the defensive coordinator at Florida State. His defense was ranked second best in the nation.

Tennessee is trying hard to lure Charlie Strong away from Louisville. The Cardinals just won the Big East conference championship.

With the Vols landing one of the hottest names in coaching in Strong , the bottom feeders in the league all appear to have made very solid hires. All this could spell tough times ahead for Mizzou.

Missouri won just two SEC games this year, beating Kentucky at home and Tennessee in four overtimes.  Based on the upgrades being made by the other schools that finished in the bottom half of the league, the Tigers’ future schedules just got a whole lot tougher. Gary Pinkel has a lot of work to do to get Mizzou back on track, or the SEC may turn out to be too much for the Tigers to handle.
