HAZELWOOD, Mo (KMOV.com) – Police are investigating a tragic death after they say a mother left an infant in a bathtub with the water running.

Police say the mother, who was staying at the Extended Stay Hotel in the 6000 block of North Lindbergh Avenue for the last three months, intended to bathe the child and left the room as the infant lay in the bath tub with the water running.

The mother became distracted and left the bathroom for a short period of time.  After realizing what she had done, the mother claimed that she went back into the bathroom finding the child not breathing in the tub full of water.  She removed her son from the tub and began giving him CRR as she dialed 911.

When police arrived, they found the nine-month-old male infant on the floor in the room with the his mother as she was administering CPR.

The child was taken to DePaul Hospital Emergency Room, but emergency workers were unable to revive him.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 3:00 p.m..

The mother of the infant, a 24 year old white female, is in custody pending further investigation into the incident.

Authorities say there were no signs of abuse, but are looking into whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the child's death based on evidence found in the mother's room.
