Police: Suspect arrested in fatal Granite City hit-and-run

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A suspect has been arrested in connection to the hit-and-run death of a woman in Granite City, according to police.

Shari L. Watts, 50, was found dead Saturday morning along the northbound lane of Route 3, half a mile south of Niedringhaus Avenue.

Police received several calls from motorists reporting a body along the roadway around 7 a.m. Authorities say they believe the woman was hit several hours before she was discovered.

Watts, an East Alton resident, is believed to have been in the Brooklyn, Ill. area around 7:30 p.m. Friday. Police say she may have been seeking a ride home at the time.

Authorities confirm they have a suspect in custody and a vehicle impounded, but have released no further information.The case will be presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney on Monday for possible charges.
