ST. LOUIS ( -- A Metro East mother is making an urgent plea for help; saying she needs to see a doctor but can’t afford to go.

Angela McDaniel is facing almost $7,000 in medical bills for health problems that began last Spring.

“In April I got really sick and I had to go the E.R,” she said. “They told me because my medical card had my maiden name on it, I wasn’t covered.”

The hospital won’t take McDaniel’s Medicaid card. She married her husband, a lance corporal in the Marines, last year.

“I sent them copy of my marriage license, my birth certificate, a photo copy of my I.D., my social security card,” she said.

Now McDaniel is being hounded by bill collectors. But, there are some answers on the way.

For nearly a month News 4 has been working with agents from Illinois’ Department of Children and Family services in Chicago to get to the bottom of this.

They tell us they’re reaching out to McDaniel’s doctors to identify bills the state will pay.

In the meantime, they’ve reached out to McDaniel for more information and say they’re reviewing her case to assure her eligibility is correctly established.
