(KMOV) -- The Metropolitan Sewer District is warning people to stay away from Deer Creek in Rock Hill after a sewer leak.
Officials say someone reported foul odors near the 2700 block of McKnight Monday evening.
Crews found a 12-inch sewer main blocked with debris causing sewage to enter Deer Creek.
Workers contained the leak downstream and pumps were brought in to clean up the area.
MSD officials estimate that approximately 8,000 gallons of sewage went into Deer Creek, contaminating 1,900 feet of the creek’s bank and killing an undetermined amount of fish.
Officials said there is no immediate threat to public health and safety.
People should avoid the area for the next 48 to 72 hours.
