CHICAGO (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn is trying to drum up support for wide-ranging changes he made to a concealed carry bill.

The Chicago Democrat spoke Sunday at a church on Chicago's West Side about violence in that city over the holiday weekend. Chicago authorities say shootings since the eve of the Fourth of July have left at least nine people dead and several dozen wounded, including two boys shot in different parks.

Quinn called his changes to the legislation common sense for protecting Illinoisans.

However, lawmakers are expected to override Quinn's changes when they meet Tuesday in Springfield.

Illinois has to meet a court-ordered Tuesday deadline to pass concealed carry legislation. A federal appeals court ruled Illinois' last-in-the-nation ban unconstitutional.

The original bill was agreed to after months of intense debate.
