(KMOV.com) – Fair St. Louis was evacuated for a brief time Saturday afternoon because of dangerous weather.
Officials issued an evacuation notice close to 3:45 p.m. because they spotted nearby lightning. Fairgoers were told to leave the fairgrounds and were allowed to return after 15 minutes.
Fair St. Louis has employed an alert system to keep those attending safe. On either side of the main stage, flags of a particular color are set up to inform people of how high the alert level is.
A green flag means everything is fine, yellow tells fairgoers to be cautious, and a red flag indicates the fairgrounds are closed and everyone needs to leave. Officials said the system comes in handy during an emergency.
"We want to be able to communicate to fairgoers, so it's more visual because when we have an emergency we have to cut the power to the stage so we can't announce anything,” Parker Condie said.
Officials said the flags will be used when there is bad weather, but also may be indicate some other threat or emergency.
