(KMOV) – A north St. Louis man faces charges after police said he stole two cameras from a local Walmart, then tried to blame the crime on his murdered cousin.

Damon Lovett Sr., 35, was charged June 26 with stealing.

According to court documents, surveillance cameras showed Lovett taking a camera out of its box at the Walmart in the 3200 block of Telegraph Rd. on April 24. Lovett then stuffed the $449 camera in his jacket and left the store without purchasing it.

Police said Lovett returned to the store two days later and removed a $229 camera from its box. He then put the item in a friend’s purse and left in the same getaway vehicle as the first theft.

An investigation led police to Lovett, who denied ever being at the store. Lovett said they must have confused him with his cousin, Julius Caldwell, who he said died in St. Louis a few days before.

Authorities looked into Lovett’s claims and determined Caldwell had died on April 21, three days before the initial theft.

Lovett was arrested and taken into custody. His bond was set at $5,000.
