(BaseballStL) -- Hours before the St. Louis Cardinals began a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, left fielder Matt Holliday was scratched from Tuesday’s starting lineup due to neck tightness.

Holliday entered Tuesday ranking third in the National League in runs scored with 59, but has struggled at the plate while posting a career-low .267 batting average this season. He has reached base in 36 of his last 41 games played.

The Cardinals had Holliday slated to bat in the No. 3 hole, but Carlos Beltran filled in at the spot while playing right field after originally being assigned the designated hitter duties. Allen Craig batted cleanup and played left field while Matt Adams, who battled food poisoning on Sunday, started at first base. David Freese batted sixth as the designated hitter. Daniel Descalso made his third start of the season at third base.

In 76 games played this season, Holliday has 11 home runs and 41 RBI and batted .354 with runners in scoring position.
