NL Central Watch: Baileys no-no, Pirates finally lose

(BaseballStL) -- It was a history-making night for Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey on Tuesday.

Bailey became the first player since Nolan Ryan in 1974-75 to hurl the league’s last two no-hitters after mowing down the San Francisco Giants in a 3-0 victory. He allowed only one walk, which was issued in the seventh inning, in the almost-perfect performance.

Bailey needed 109 pitches, including 74 strikes, to achieve his second career no-hitter in front of 27,509 fans at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

The St. Louis Cardinals finally received help from the Pittsburgh Pirates’ opposition on Tuesday. The Philadelphia Phillies snapped the Pirates’ nine-game winning streak with a 3-1 win at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Seven Phillies pitchers combined to allowed only one run on six hits and six walks to the Pirates offense. The only Pirates run came on a home run hit by Garrett Jones in the sixth inning.
