(KMOV.com) -- Thieves who target air conditioners looking for copper may have to find a new line of work.
Manufacturers have caught on to the crime trend and are making major changes to new models.
Instead of copper coils which can be sold for scrap metal, models are being made with aluminum- a metal that won’t fetch nearly the same price at scrap yards.
Installers hope to get the word out in order to reduce the incentive to steal AC units.
“It kind of deters, it’s all aluminum, it’s very little copper,” said AC installer James Savage. “You are going to get a quarter of what you were going to get.”
With the new models thieves will get about $25 instead of the $75 they were getting for copper.
The newer units are a more expensive but are also more efficient, according to industry officials.
