Cards 3 HRs not enough in loss to As

(BaseballStL) -- Facing left-handed pitchers and hitting home runs have been headaches for the St. Louis Cardinals this season.

It seemed to be the only thing the Cardinals offense could do in a 7-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

The Cardinals greeted lefty Tommy Milone, who entered the game with 16 home runs allowed in his first 16 starts, with three home runs before the end of the third inning.

Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, and Matt Carpenter homered to right field in the third inning off Milone. The three home runs gave the Cardinals, who entered the game 23rd in the majors in home runs, a total of 74 through 81 games played this season.

The powerful offense wasn’t able to withstand the A’s bats, who took a 6-5 lead on a two-run home run off Jake Westbrook in the fourth inning. It was only the second home run allowed by Westbrook in 61 innings pitched this season. The A’s added another solo home run for a 7-5 score.

Westbrook allowed six runs (all earned) on 10 hits and two walks over four innings pitched. It was the shortest outing of any of his 10 starts this season.
