(CBS SPORTS) - Kevin Shattenkirk had a very strong season for the St. Louis Blues this year and they have rewarded him with a big new contract.

The defenseman has signed a four-year contract extension to remain in St. Louis, and according to Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he's getting a pretty good raise. Rutherford says the contract is for $17 million over those four seasons, $4.25 million annually.

Shattenkirk was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next week but not anymore. The new deal will carry through the 2016-17 season at which point Shattenkirk will be available for unrestricted free agency. Oh, by the way, the Blues also need to reach a new deal with Alex Pietrangelo, another restricted free agent, and he's likely to command more than Shattenkirk.

It's going to be a costly summer for the Blues. They already announced a one-year deal with Patrik Berglund as well.

Shattenkirk came to the Blues in 2010-11 along with Chris Stewart in a deal that sent Erik Johnson to the Avalanche. He played all 48 games this season for the Blues, recording five goals and 18 assists. It's a pretty good deal for the Blues, it would seem. That's a pretty fair price for a young defenseman with a scoring touch.
