CHICAGO—Advocates of gay marriage in Illinois are celebrating a landmark ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court that says legally married same-sex couples should get the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples.

Equality Illinois director Bernard Cherkasov said Wednesday that the ruling shows the federal government can’t ignore Constitutional principles. However, the group says the ruling invalidating a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act is “bittersweet.”

That’s because Illinois doesn’t allow gay marriage. State lawmakers declined to vote on the matter earlier this year. Illinois does allow civil unions, which the group says is like a “second class status.”

Activists say the ruling energizes their push for gay marriage in Illinois.
