(KMOV.com) – The Missouri Highway Patrol arrested a man they say jumped out of a car and off a bridge into the Meramec River in south St. Louis County Wednesday morning.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said crews had been searching for Jeff Henning in the Meramec River ever since he had gone missing.
Police said they tried to stop a speeding vehicle near Highway 21 North and Highway 141 around 1:30 a.m.
Officials said Henning stopped on a bridge over the Meramec. He then moved to the passenger side of the vehicle, exited and jumped off the bridge into the water.
Police and fire crews searched along the Meramec River for several hours Wednesday morning and were unable to locate him. Searchers used side sonar and dragging techniques in hopes of finding Henning.
Officers say they knew who the car was registered to, though it was unclear whether Henning was the owner.
Police searched the river for hours before learning the man had survived the jump and contacted relatives.
It was not known why Henning jumped.
