Official News Release from the Cardinals:
Cardinals recall rookie pitcher Michael Blazek; lefty Tyler Lyons optioned to Memphis (AAA)
The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled rookie right-handed pitcher Michael Blazek from Memphis (AAA) and optioned left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons to the triple-A club. Blazek, 24, appeared on the Cardinals Major League roster earlier this season (May 26-29), but did not appear in any games.
Blazek was drafted by the Cardinals in the 35th round (1,068th player overall) of the 2007 June draft out of Arbor View High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 6-0, 200-pound righty most recently has appeared in eight games for Memphis where he posted a 2.31 ERA and one save. Four of his eight outings at Memphis have been 2.0 innings, including his most recent on Thursday (June 20) at Round Rock, the Texas Rangers triple-A affiliate. Blazek has struck out 19 batters in his 11.2 IP for Memphis and walked three.
Earlier this season, Blazek had appeared in 17 games for the Springfield Cardinals (AA), allowing just two earned runs on 11 hits in 19.2 innings pitched (0.92 ERA) while fanning 25. He and teammate Keith Butler had each saved seven games, ranking T2nd in the Texas League. Blazek has yet to allow a homer this season in 31.1 combined innings with Memphis and Springfield.
Lyons was 2-3 with a 5.51 ERA in six starts for the Cardinals.
