(KMOV) – A woman paid University City police officers to patrol her street near the Delmar Loop on Halloween night in an effort to keep children safe.
On the 7100 block of Washington, a pair of officers patrolled all night as part of a secondary assignment as kids travel around trick-or-treating.
“I got to find out who that is. That's awesome. That's awesome. We need more people in this world to step up like that,” said Mike Weismiller, a neighbor.
Lt. Deken said this is not out of the department’s budget. They don’t have the manpower to staff ever street and in this case it’s just a woman who wanted to take care of the children.
“While the trick-or-treaters are out, while the kids are out, I want visible police presence, yes." Lt. Deken.
Police say it cost about $20 to $40 an hour for the secondary work.
"We live here close to the Loop and there are areas that aren't always as safe and it just gives you that extra piece of mind,” said Weismiller.
police stepped up patrols for Halloween throughout the St. Louis area.
