SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Two counties in southern Illinois have started allowing jail inmates use electronic cigarettes.
So far White County and Saline County are letting inmates use the nicotine-infused vapor inhalers. Lee Enterprises newspapers reports officials in Franklin, Wabash and Williamson counties also are deciding if they’ll let inmates use electronic, or e-cigarettes. Jails often ban inmates from smoking cigarettes.
White County jail administrator Randy Cobb says he thinks “it’s a trend all counties will eventually adopt.” Cobb says it has slowed contraband and raised inmate morale.
Saline County jail administrator says there haven’t been any problems at his Harrisburg lockup.
There are opponents. The American Lung Association in Illinois says it’s “deeply troubled” by jails using e-cigarettes to make money.
