(KMOV) -- An update on the cleanup of a former copper smelter plant in Madison County, Ill. will be given at an open house Wednesday evening.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be on hand in Hartford, Ill. to update residents on how the cleanup of more than 11,000 tons of potentially-contaminated material at the Chemetco plant is going.
The plant opened in the late 1960s and owners filed bankruptcy in late 2001, a year after federal agents and the state filed environmental claims against the company.
Since then, it's been a long process to clean up the slag from the site. Specifically, those around the plant have been worried about the effect the plant has had on soil, surface water and ground water throughout the area.
Those wishing to attend the open house should arrive at the Community Center in Hartford between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
