SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Three Illinois programs will benefit from $3.6 million in grants from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Madison County will get $3.4 million for two programs.
The southwestern Illinois county will receive more than $700,000 for the HOME program. It helps expand the supply of decent affordable housing for low-income families through grants to local governments.
It is the largest federal block grant to state and local governments used just for creating affordable housing.
The county will also get $2.6 million for a Community Development Block Grant. And a block grant for $280,000 will go to Des Plaines in Cook County.
The block grants are annual payments to states and local governments to develop urban communities with decent housing and a "suitable living environment."
