Concerns over accountability and trust after SLMPD officer is indicted

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -

Chief Sam Dotson said the alleged behavior of former officer Don McGhee has compromised the St. Louis Police Department's integrity.

McGhee was charged after he allegedly gave a shot gun to known drug dealers. Two other officers are also under investigation for alleged misconduct. Many city leaders are demanding answers, including Aldermanic President Lewis Reed, who is calling for public hearings.

“Trust and accountability are so important in this climate because of the things that have happened in Ferguson. The things that have happened in the city of St. Louis, and the division that exists between the police department and some of the young people that live in our community.

Many residents said they are concerned.

“It's scary, because now it makes you wonder if our law enforcement is there to protect us, or to put the weapons and drugs back on the streets,” said resident Rose Canady.

Reed said it is good that the news of the alleged misconduct stemmed from an internal investigation.

“They brought it up, so that does give us some hope moving forward,” Reed said.

The St. Louis Police Department declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
