Did Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester apply substance to ball?

(BaseballStL) – Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester effectively shut down Cardinals hitters on Wednesday, tossing 7.2 scoreless innings in an 8-1 victory in Game 1 of the World Series.

But according to a picture posted on Twitter by Cardinals minor league pitcher Tyler Melling, he might have had a foreign substance in his glove.

Major League Baseball offficials said the photos and videos of the alleged substance were inconclusive.

Pat Courtney, MLB's senior vice president of public relations, issued the following statement on Thursday:

"We cannot draw any conclusions from this video. There were no complaints from the Cardinals and the umpires never detected anything indicating a foreign substance throughout the game."

The report said the Cardinals would not pursue the issue with the league any further.
