(KMOV) – A 2-year-old dog has been given a 50 percent chance of surviving after suffering extreme animal abuse.

The dog has been diagnosed with skin disease, heartworm infection and malnutrition.

Police in Sauget, Illinois say they plan to ask for charges on Wednesday against the 24-year-old woman who owns the dog. According to officials, the woman says she lost her job about a year ago and has not had the funds to take care of the dog.

The dog has been renamed Aaron, and is now at the Hope Animal Rescue Shelter in Alton, Illinois.

The shelter is accepting donations for efforts to save the animal.Call
