EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- The estate of a southwestern Illinois educator who died of leukemia in 2008 is suing operators of a nearby refinery, blaming supposed leaks from that site for her disease.
Debra Ochs' widower filed the lawsuit in Madison County on behalf of himself and their daughter.
The (Alton) Telegraph reports that Debra Ochs was serving as a Roxana school district teacher and principal when she was exposed to cancer-causing benzene allegedly released by the refinery.
The lawsuit says Shell Oil Co. and BP Products North America owned and operated the refinery during the time Ochs stayed or worked near that site.
BP says it denies some allegations and lacks enough knowledge about others, including Debra Ochs' illness.
A representative from Shell hasn't returned a message seeking comment.
