(KMOV) – A 16-year-old girl was killed in a car accident Thursday afternoon while on her way to work.

The accident happened around 4:00 p.m. near Collinsville, when Bethany Budwell's car drifted over the center median, went through a cable barrier and into oncoming traffic on Interstate 55/70 between Routes 157 and 159.

As Budwell's Plymouth Laser entered the eastbound lanes of I-55/70 it was hit by a Honda Civic driven by Corey Roelofs, 28, of Kansas City, Kansas. Both Roelofs and his passenger, David Platt, 44, of Lawrence, Kansas, were injured and transported to St. Louis University Hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

After being hit by the Honda Civic, Budwell's car was then struck by and SUV. The SUV then crashed into the guardrail. No one in the SUV was injured.

Budwell was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.
