CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- A Champaign County judge has awarded about $11 million to a woman critically injured in a 2004 traffic collision near Mahomet.
The Champaign News-Gazette reports that Judge Jeff Ford's award this week stems from a 2005 personal injury lawsuit filed by Carla Link of Burlington, Iowa, and her family.
The Links were driving their daughter on Interstate 74 when their van was struck by a pickup truck after the driver of the truck fell asleep.
The truck driver, Clovis Crane, of Lebanon, Pa., wasn't injured and Link's family recovered from their injuries. But Carla Link suffered brain trauma, several broken bones and extensive nerve damage along her spine and legs.
In depositions, doctors said the nerve damages still cause intense pain that will likely continue the rest of her life.
