SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Supreme Court has some reassuring news for parents whose teenage children throw parties and lie about whether there will be drinking.
The court on Thursday blocked a lawsuit that sought to hold a couple liable for a drunken-driving death after a party at their home. Teens drank at the party even though the parents had forbidden it.
Eighteen-year-old Daniel Bell died from crashing into a tree after the party. His family sued the Lake County couple that allowed the party, Jeffrey and Sara Hutsell
The court ruled the Hutsells weren't responsible because they didn't promise other parents the party would be alcohol-free. They also didn't take steps to prevent drinking, which might have left them open to claims that their actions were faulty.
