Slowdown in barge transportation could cause increased grocery prices

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A slowdown in barge transportation could make prices go up at the grocery store.

According to the head of the local port, every tow boat you see on the Mississippi River pushes the equivalent of about 1,000 truckloads of material – mostly with moving grain, steel and fuel.

But because of the flooding, the traffic is backing up, which could force operators to move their products from the river onto the highways or railways.

That will cost operators more, and those costs will be passed onto consumers.
