SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials have advice for boaters this summer: stay safe, sober and wear life jackets.
The advice from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police is part of next week's National Safe Boating Week.
Agency director Marc Miller says the best way to stay safe on the water is to be sober and wear a life jacket.
The agency's police routinely do safety inspections of boats and check for gear like life jackets. Illinois law requires life jackets or vests to be available for everyone on a boat or other watercraft.
IDNR Law Enforcement Chief Rafael Gutierrez says they routinely rescue people who survive boating accidents because they were wearing life jackets.
