Roxana, Illinois residents urged to stay out of basements due to toxic gas leak

(KMOV) – Residents in Roxanna, Ill. are being warned not to sleep in their basements, as cancer-causing vapors have been found in nearby soil and groundwater.

Residents in the city live close to oil refinery that has a Benzene leak.

For more than two decades, hazardous gases emitted by the oil company, which is owned by Shell, have been seeping into the ground.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is supervising the Benzene removal, and hopes to finish its investigation at the refinery within a few weeks.

Benzene is a natural gas that can harm the body’s bone marrow and blood cells. It is highly flammable and linked to cancer.

Shell has been ordered to come up with a solution for those who live near the refinery.
