(KMOV) – A chemical seeping through a rusty barrel caused a scare in an alley near Holly Hills Avenue in south St. Louis.
A resident notified authorities of the possible hazmat situation in the 6400 block of Pennsylvania around 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
No evacuations were ordered, but crews had the alley closed while they attempted to identify the substance.
Crews determined that the substance spilling from the drum is "agar", a natural vegetable gelatin counter-part.
It is not considered dangerous.
The fire department marked the drum, to indicate that they've checked it. The health department has been asked to pick it up Wednesday.
No one knows where it came from.
