Police respond to questions of safety in downtown after recent crimes

(KMOV) – Some visitors are wondering if downtown St. Louis and surrounding areas are safe after a rash of recent crimes.

St. Louis police say overall downtown crime is down about 24 percent compared to this time in 2010.

However, just last month, a police officer was shot and killed outside The Label bar, just a few blocks south of Busch Stadium. And Monday night, a little north of downtown, two men held up a McDonald’s on Tucker.

Washington Ave. is one of the major hotspots, and police say extra patrols have led to a decrease in crime.

Police say these are pockets of crime that move from location to location, depending on where police are patrolling.

Officers stress that the violent crimes mentioned earlier are random, and with so many sporting special events happening this summer, extra officers will be patrolling the downtown area.
