(KMOV) – In some parts of the Metro East it may take up to 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive at the scene of an emergency.
A number of incidents have happened this year when all of Alton Memorial Hospital’s ambulances have been busy with other dispatch calls in communities such as Bethalto, East Alton and Wood River. A backup ambulance has to be dispatched from as far as Edwardsville.
Alton Memorial Ambulance has five day crews and four night crews and believes this is not a common occurrence, but rescheduling crews may solve the problem from ever happening.
Madison County fire chiefs plan to meet with hospital officials soon to work out a solution.
