(KMOV) – Scam artists are starting to take advantage of the rental property market by taking real property listings and making them their own.
The scam artists take the owners identity and start the scam by setting up accounts such as emails under their name.
The scam artists usually take information from the Internet regarding the home and copy it as their own. They will often ask potential buyers to send a deposit and they will send the buyer the keys to the home.
Police find it difficult to catch the scammers because they can change bank accounts, email addresses and phone numbers quickly.
To avoid being scammed, potential buyers are urged to work with reputable real estate agents especially if you are looking to lease property out of town.
