JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Several Missouri residents who wrote to Sen. Claire McCaskill about raising the federal debt ceiling have had a chance to talk directly with the Democratic lawmaker.
McCaskill held a conference call from her Washington office Friday with selected constituents from Wildwood, Smithville, Kansas City, Steelville and O'Fallon.
McCaskill says they were chosen because they had written thoughtful letters expressing a range of perspectives.
The letter writers said it was important that members of Congress be willing to compromise -- a point on which McCaskill agreed. Some also expressed concern about what could happen if no deal is reached.
The federal government faces a Tuesday deadline to raise its borrowing limit.
