Train hits car, kills driver at California crossing

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities in Southern California say a freight train hit a car at a rail crossing, killing the vehicle's driver.
Riverside police Lt. Chuck Griffitts says the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train hit the BMW shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.
Griffitts says the vehicle's roadside communications system informed police the air bag had deployed and that the driver wouldn't respond.
A police helicopter spotted the sedan embedded in the front of the train about a half-mile from the intersection.
Officers reached the area on foot and pulled out the driver before the car caught fire, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Griffitts says the man, whose name was not released, was about 30.
No one from the train was hurt.
Police are investigating why the car was on the tracks.
