(KMOV) – In Belleville, some crimes victims are now being asked to put down the phone to call police and instead log in online. The department says it will help save time and money.
Residents can now fill out forms online that enable people to fill out crime reports for stolen bicycles and cell phones. After testing the program out this summer with a form for gas drive-offs at convenience stores, police say it works in keeping officers from being tied up doing paperwork, sometimes on overtime.
Until now, reports for stolen bikes were often taken by dispatchers over the phone or even officers in person. Police say they believe this new program will work so well at keeping more cops on the street that there is already talk of expanding the online reporting for identity theft and other problems.
Belleville, like most cities, is struggling in tough times. And like most area departments, it has to get creative in doing more with less.
