EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A man who claimed he pummeled a southwestern Illinois woman to death with a baseball bat in self-defense has been ordered to spend 47 years in prison.
Thirty-four-year-old Scott Moore was sentenced Thursday in Madison County to 37 years for first-degree murder and a decade for armed robbery. He was convicted in July.
Moore told investigators the deadly July 2009 confrontation in Catherine Fowler's Granite City apartment came during a dispute about money he owed her for cocaine.
He says Fowler began poking him with the bat, then swinging it at his head before he grabbed it and hit her back.
A pathologist testified that Fowler was hit repeatedly on the head and face and suffered massive blunt-force injuries, among other trauma consistent with someone trying to defend herself.
