(KMOV) -- Hundreds of people in North St. Louis City are without power after a car crashed into utility pole early Tuesday morning.

The crash took place just after 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of Thomas and Glasgow in North St. Louis City.

Authorities say a car slammed into the utility pole and snapped it causing hundreds of residents to lose power in the 63106 area code of the neighborhood.

No one was found inside the vehicle when police crews arrived on the scene.

However, police did discover a 20-year-old man shot in a grassy area nearby the accident shortly after arrival.

The man was transported to an area hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Authorities are not sure if the injured victim was in the car at the time of the accident or if the shooting is related to the car accident.

At one point it was reported close to 600 people were without power.

Ameren crews are currently on the scene working to restore power back to residents.

A police investigation is underway.
