ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A 49-year-old man died while in police custody after he was arrested for trespassing in the 5700 block of Wabada on Monday, officials say.

Police say the suspect, Tommy Fluellen, escaped from the rear of the patrol car while handcuffed.

Officers say they chased the suspect and caught him in the backyard of his home in the 5600 block of Highland. The suspect reportedly resisted arrest and fought with officers as they attempted to take him back into custody.

When officers maced the suspect, he stopped resisting.

Police then put him back into the cruiser and he later became unresponsive while inside.

Emergency officials took Fluellen to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The initial assessment from doctors indicated he went into cardiac arrest. Doctors also said he had no visible sign of trauma to the body.

News 4's Diana Zoga spoke with Fluellen's fiance who said that officers kicked him while taking him into custody.

Homicide detectives have been assigned to investigate the case.
