FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia woman has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges that she killed her 2-year-old granddaughter by tossing the girl off an elevated walkway last year.
Jury selection began Monday morning in Fairfax County Circuit Court, and opening statements may be heard in the afternoon. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
Prosecutors say Carmela Dela Rosa's conduct was premeditated. They say she was not insane when she tossed Angelyn Ogdoc off the sixth-level walkway at Tysons Corner Center after a family outing.
Ogdoc fell about 50 feet and died nine hours after the fall.
Public defender Dawn Butorac has said her client suffers from significant mental illness.
