(KMOV)-- One pedestrian is killed; another was injured after a car hits a squad car and flees police in downtown St. Louis early Sunday morning.
According to reports, one black male pedestrian was killed; a white female was taken to the hospital after two people in a Mustang allegedly struck the pedestrians walking across the bridge deck eastbound on the Poplar Street Bridge.
Police say the mustang rammed a marked police vehicle at the intersection of Market and Memorial St. then fled the scene, crossing the Poplar Street Bridge, the officer pursued the Mustang at approximately 3:38 a.m.
The car was finally stopped at Illinois 3 at 8th Street after hitting the pedestrians, where two men, both allegedly intoxicated, were taken into custody.
The male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, the female pedestrian was taken to an area hospital suffering from a severe leg injury.
The 50-year-old officer struck by the suspects was treated and released from a local hospital after suffering neck and back injuries.
Police have now identified the pedestrian killed as Daunte D. Simmons, 26, of St. Louis.
The second pedestrian has been identified as Elvira Secic, 27, of St. Louis. Secic is currently listed in serious condition at a St. Louis-area hospital.
One suspect is currently being held in a St. Clair County jail pending felony warrant application for Reckless Homicide.
An investigation is currently underway by Illinois State Police.
