(KMOV) -- A man was shot and killed after attempting to break into a home in South St. Louis City early Friday morning.

The shooting took place at a home located in the 2800 block of Magnolia around 12:30 a.m.

Police say a 48-year-old man who was house-sitting said he woke up after hearing Rico Kemp, 39, kick in a rear door.

The victim stated he feared for his safety and fired one shot, striking the suspect in the chest. Kemp was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to authorities the family who owned the home moved out a couple weeks ago.

The home was in the process of being rehabbed.

There is no word on if the shooter will face any possible charges at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
