(KMOV) – After a two-hour manhunt Monday night, St. Charles police have arrested two metal thieves caught in the act and who they say may also be responsible for vandalizing sprinkler systems all over St. Charles County.

Police say the thieves were out in daylight along a busy road around 1 p.m. trying to cut a back flow valve.

Officials say a bystander walking a dog noticed something strange and called police.

Once police arrived, the pair, a man and a woman in their mid to late 20s reportedly ran off, but police saturated the area on foot and in the air and tracked them down.

Officials say these thieves may be responsible for similar crimes in the area.

The stolen copper can net a thief $150 to $2,000 when resold.
