ST. LOUIS (KMOV) - In his first on camera interview since an inmate escaped from the city workhouse Friday night, Mayor Francis Slay admits there have been problems with leadership and operations at the jail for a long time.
Mayor Slay says what's happening at the city jails is "unacceptable and embarrassing."
Four inmates have escaped in 15 months; 3 from the workhouse and 1 from the justice center. Just a few hours before Lorenzo Pollard escaped, Superintendent Gene Stubblefield was suspended. Hes been in charge of the jails for more than four years.
Mayor Slay says, "at the very least these jails need to be able to keep prisoners inside of them. When that doesn't happen, the system is failing. It's broke."
An internal investigation is underway right now covering all jail employees. More suspensions and firing are certainly possible.
