JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has won a federal grant to study the state's rural landfills.
The department said in a release that the $216,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be used to assess the condition of some of the state's older, rural landfills. They often operated under less stringent standards than modern landfills. The department also said that some of the older landfills didn't close properly.
The landfill assessments began in November and will continue until this summer.
After the assessments are done, the DNR will provide technical assistance and training to landfill owners about maintenance, upkeep activities and future use of the landfills to protect area water resources.
