CHAMPAIGN, ill. (AP) -- Former Carolina Panthers assistant coach Mike Gillhamer has joined Illinois' staff and will coach the Illini secondary.
The school said in a news release Friday that Gillhamer spent the past seven seasons coaching the Panthers' safeties.
Head coach Ron Zook called Gillhamer a detail-oriented teacher and a strong recruiter.
Gillhamer has 11 seasons of NFL experience and has coached college football for 21 years. His last college job was in 2003 when he was defensive coordinator at Louisville where he worked with current Illini offensive coordinator Paul Petrino.
Gillhamer replaces Dan Disch who left to become defensive coordinator at Southern Mississippi.
