BERKELEY (KMOV) -- The Major Case Squad is investigating after a possible homicide victim was found at the Washington Park Cemetery in Berkeley.

Police were alerted that a badly decomposed body was discovered lying along a road at the back of the cemetery. Officials say the body could have been there for more than two months.

The victim has been identified as William Shoemate, 48, of St. Louis.

News 4 contacted the owner of the cemetery, Kevin Bailey.  When reached by phone, Bailey said he had not been informed of the Major Case Squad investigation.

Bailey said there is no on-site office at the cemetery and no one is employed to maintain the grounds.  So, it is not clear who found the body.

Bailey runs a non-profit group and purchased the cemetery in 2009.  He says his father is buried there and hoped to clean up the site.  Often, volunteers in the community work on the grounds.
