Missouri tourism officials call for more state funding

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Tourism was down in Missouri last year, and state officials say lawmakers should give the state's tourism division more marketing money if they want to attract more visitors.

Tourism director Katie Steele Danner says spending by tourists helps create jobs and tax revenue in every county of the state. The state Tourism Commission's annual report shows that fewer Missourians had jobs in the tourism industry and the size of the industry shrank in 2010.

Danner says the agency needs a minimum of $16 million to adequately promote the state. The division currently receives $13.4 million. Gov. Jay Nixon has recommended the division receive the same amount in the coming fiscal year.

Danner says the state currently is using "a whisper rather than a bullhorn" to promote itself.
